ART 100 Global Perspectives in Art121900IA,DA, 25 seats are for the Global Humboldt student cohort
ART 301 Art and Propaganda121093IA,Art and Propaganda: persuasion through art, design, film and photography The American government and its foreign counterparts sought effective channels of communication with the public during the two World Wars as well as during the Cold War. The most important were the US as well as Germany and the Soviet Union but other European countries as well as Japan were also relevant proponents. We will take an in-depth look at how countries and governments utilize art to sway the public. This course will examine how subtle or crass this form of persuasion can be and why it can be so effective.
ART 302 Surrealism and Magic Realism122180IA,Between Dreams and Reality: Surrealism and Magic Realism in the Americas With the onset of World War II and escalating persecution of ¿degenerate art,¿ a mass migration of avant-garde artists fled Nazi-occupied Europe, contributing to unprecedented artistic exchange in their locations of exile. In this course we will examine the passage of Surrealist artists and intellectuals away from Europe, and explore the precedents and subsequent developments of Surrealism in cities such as Havana, Los Angeles, Port-au-Prince, Mexico City, New York, San Francisco, and São Paulo. While many artists in

the Americas were deeply influenced by Surrealist methods, some, like Frida Kahlo, rejected association with the movement. As Kahlo famously stated, ¿I never paint by dreams or nightmares. I paint my reality.¿ Helen Lundeberg and Manuel Álvarez Bravo also explored absurd, magical, and mysterious aspects of everyday life through painting and photography. Even Wolfgang Paalen, an influential Surrealist in Paris, rejected Surrealism after relocating to Mexico City, and formed a new movement called Dynaton, which sought to express universal subject matter through explorations with science and

visual abstraction.

ES 480 Act to End Racism226846IA,We are living in a challenging time: old forms of racism are appearing in new guises, while overt white supremacy is re-entering the public arena. Familiar forms of liberal multicultural activism have not transformed racialized systems of inequality. But this is also an era of inspirational activism, where mass movements are challenging the very logic of racialized violence, exclusion and marginalization, from Black Lives Matter to the Dream Defenders. We will explore together ways to learn from and act with these movements to transform our campus community.
