HSU Retention Cohort and Reporting Definitions

First-Time Freshmen (FTF) cohort
Graduated from high school in the same year as newly enrolled at HSU, or not attempted any college units since graduation from high school. Excludes various non-matriculated students (transitory, high school concurrent, over 60 non-matric, fee waiver non-matric). This definition applies fairly consistently across the time span of our data warehouse (Fall 91 to present).

Transfer Student Cohort
New Upper Division transfers including Sophomores with 56 or more units See Admission Basis below for additional information on transfer admission types included
Masters Student Cohort
New Graduate level students with a degree objective of MA, MS, MBA, MFA, or MSW. Transitory students are not included.

Federal Student-Right-to-Know cohort
Full-time, first-time Freshmen. All admit types are included

Part/Full Time
Undergraduate Student taking 12 or more units is full time, 9 units for graduate level student.

Basis of Admission
For the First-Time Freshmen cohort, the exception admit codes are:
The "FTF Pilot Program" had been used for students who lack one or more basic subjects. These subject areas have varied over time. The pilot program is being discontinued.

Ethnicity breakdown
Broad groupings are used rather than the 27 possible CSU ethnicity codes.

Breakdown by Majors
Majors are portrayed with various concentrations and options collapsed into each general major code. For example, the 8 Biology options are simply reported as "Biology".

Dependent Student Family Income
This information comes from the admission application. While not a required response, it appears the majority of students provide the information. This data is not validated against other sources.

Sports involvement
A student is considered an athlete for a year, even if participating in just a Fall or Spring sport. Thus, this query examines both Fall and the subsequent Spring term for athletic participation. Thus, some students may be counted more than once in these tallies.

SAT Scores
Starting in Spring or Fall 99, the maximum of either Math or Verbal SAT score is used from different sittings. Prior to that, both scores were reported from the same sitting of the test.

Probation Status
Academic Standing is determined at the end of each term after grades are processed. Since our data warehouse is census-based, the academic standing for each term represents what is known at the end of the term and how the student goes into to next term. The end-of-term academic standing figures may not exactly tally with census enrollments since they are generated at a different times.

Students must generally be on probation for at least 1 term before they become disqualified. Upon reinstatement, the student's academic standing will indicate "Reinstated" and their subsequent term academic standing may be anything (that is, they do not necessarily stay on probation after being reinstated). Student Standing codes are as follows:

Origin of students
Starting, Fall 2002, the origin of a student is based on a prior institution attended. Since many students move locally just prior to attending for in-state fees, prior institution seems to provide a more realistic picture of where they come from. More specifically, prior Institution is determined by the type of student:
For freshmen, it is their high school. For transfer students, it is the prior institution where they earned the most units. For graduate students, it is the institution where they earned their baccalaureate degree.

Prior to Fall 2002, student origin was determined from the residence location indicated on the student's application.
