* Notes: IA=Instructor approval required, DA=Department approval required
* Sust: classes designated as Sustainability Focused (SF) or Sustainability Related (SR)

Generally, students must register in one section from each component type shown for a particular class. For example, BIOL 104 has two lecture sections and several lab sections. Students who register for one of the lecture sections should also register for one of the labs associated with that lecture. Association numbers and section numbers are shown in parenthesis when multiple values exist.

Class Notes
ART 100 Global Perspectives in Art21900IA,DA, 25 seats are for the Global Humboldt student cohort
ART 301 Art and Propaganda21093IA,Art and Propaganda: persuasion through art, design, film and photography The American government and its foreign counterparts sought effective channels of communication with the public during the two World Wars as well as during the Cold War. The most important were the US as well as Germany and the Soviet Union but other European countries as well as Japan were also relevant proponents. We will take an in-depth look at how countries and governments utilize art to sway the public. This course will examine how subtle or crass this form of persuasion can be and why it can be so effective.
ART 302 Surrealism and Magic Realism22180IA,Between Dreams and Reality: Surrealism and Magic Realism in the Americas With the onset of World War II and escalating persecution of ¿degenerate art,¿ a mass migration of avant-garde artists fled Nazi-occupied Europe, contributing to unprecedented artistic exchange in their locations of exile. In this course we will examine the passage of Surrealist artists and intellectuals away from Europe, and explore the precedents and subsequent developments of Surrealism in cities such as Havana, Los Angeles, Port-au-Prince, Mexico City, New York, San Francisco, and São Paulo. While many artists in

the Americas were deeply influenced by Surrealist methods, some, like Frida Kahlo, rejected association with the movement. As Kahlo famously stated, ¿I never paint by dreams or nightmares. I paint my reality.¿ Helen Lundeberg and Manuel Álvarez Bravo also explored absurd, magical, and mysterious aspects of everyday life through painting and photography. Even Wolfgang Paalen, an influential Surrealist in Paris, rejected Surrealism after relocating to Mexico City, and formed a new movement called Dynaton, which sought to express universal subject matter through explorations with science and visu

al abstraction.
ART 302 Islamic Art22276IA,Islamic Art This course will provide a thematic and chronological survey of Islamic art from its origins to the present day focusing on architecture, book arts, miniature painting, ceramics and textiles.
ART 321 Comics21102IA,Students will learn the fundamentals of creating sequential art, will explore historical and contemporary comics, and will be taught how to use pen and ink, watercolor, and traditional drafting tools. Students will create a series of comics based on their own ideas.
ART 337 Large Format Photography21096IA,Making use of both darkroom and digital techniques, this course will cover the use of 4x5 large format cameras to create b&w and color photos. Sheet film development, scanning, silver gelatin darkroom techniques, large scale inkjet printing, and visual storytelling will be explored. Prerequisite: ART 250 or 251 recommended, or IA
ART 372 4D Video + Animation21798IA,This class explores time as a medium in contemporary art through video and animation. This course investigates ways that time-based image making has become a key mode of communication for artists and designers.
